Sustainability Starts with Your Coffee Grounds

Date: 14-05-2025

At Foundation Coffee, we take our beans seriously—from sourcing premium coffee to perfecting the roast and helping you enjoy every sip. But once the mug’s empty and the caffeine kicks in, what’s left behind often gets overlooked: the humble used coffee grounds.

Before you sweep them into the bin, here’s a hot tip—they’re more useful than you think. Those gritty little leftovers are surprisingly good at pulling double duty around the home and garden. Here’s how to put them to work:

  1. Feed Your Plants
Coffee grounds are loaded with nitrogen and other nutrients, making them a natural pick-me-up for your plants. Add them to your compost, sprinkle directly in the soil, or mix into potting mix to improve structure and support healthy growth. Bonus points if you’re growing acid-loving plants like azaleas, hydrangeas or tomatoes—they’ll love you for it.
  2. Say bye to Bugs (without the chemicals)
Many garden pests—like slugs, ants, and snails—can’t stand the scent or texture of coffee grounds. Scatter some around your flower beds or home’s entry points to help keep unwanted visitors at bay, without resorting to harsh chemicals.
  3. Banish Bad Smells
Coffee grounds are brilliant natural deodorisers. Place a bowl of dried grounds in the fridge, your shoes, or even the bin to absorb odours. Got garlic or fish on your hands? Rub in some grounds, then rinse—the odor is gone!
  4. Scrub with Purpose
Thanks to their gritty texture, used coffee grounds work wonders as a natural cleaning scrub. Mix them with a bit of water or mild soap to tackle grease and grime. Just skip porous or light-coloured surfaces, as they may stain.

So next time you brew, don’t bin the grounds—reuse them. It’s a small step for your morning routine, a big win for the planet.
