Coffee Beans 101: How to Choose The Best Coffee Beans

Date: 24-04-2020

If you’ve just been tasked with buying coffee beans for the office coffee machine, you might be wondering where to start. With so many brands and varieties on the market today, do you really need to know your Arabica from your Robusta? Well, the good news is that a little knowledge can go a long way and with the help of our quick and informative guide you’ll be well on your way to making the right selection.

Select Your Preference

There are two broad varieties of commercial coffee beans on the market today; Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are often produced in Columbia, while Brazil produces both Arabica and Robusta.

Knowing which you prefer will help you to select the right product. If you are making that decision on behalf of your work colleagues, why not hold a taste test to see which gains the most votes? For the record, Arabica is usually considered to be the higher grade of the two varieties. Also, consider whether you need to impress guests with your bean selection as a higher-quality product can go a long way.

How Much Caffeine?

Contrary to what you may have been told, darker roasted beans actually contain less caffeine than light or medium roasted beans. Of all three it is the light roasted beans that contain the highest level of caffeine. If you really want to give the office a productivity boost and keep everybody on their toes, you might want to consider light or medium roast beans. However, we recommend that you err on the side of caution and choose a medium roast to keep everybody happy.

Always Check the Roast Date

Nobody likes stale coffee. Before buying your beans, always check the roast date so that you can see how many days have passed since the beans were roasted. Always buy coffee beans in sealed bags and aim to use the beans as quickly as possible or seal bags carefully so that the beans keep their flavor. Ideally, choose a coffee machine that has a bean grinder incorporated. This will ensure the freshest bean to cup experience.

Always Choose Beans From a Respected Roaster

When you buy coffee beans from a respected roaster, you can be sure of great coffee time after time. You might want to try out different beans to select your preference so look for a supplier that offers a range of different varieties.

At Foundation Coffee we roast our own beans. This means they get to you when they are at their freshest and deliver the finest flavor possible.
